Lee Segawa - Local Farmer

Born on O‘ahu, Segawa has lived on Hawai‘i Island since early childhood, where he also completed agricultural leadership studies through the National FFA Organization. He became involved with the Edmund C. Olson Trust in 2003, originally at OK Farms. Mere months later he was asked to establish a farm on abandoned sugar cane land in Ka‘ū, on property recently acquired by the Trust.

Backbreaking work followed. With one other worker, Segawa cleared cane haul roads, repaired fences, and reinvigorated 500 acres of macadamia nut fields. The farm soon expanded to include coffee orchards, additional acreage, as well as more employees. Today, Segawa serves as Operations Manager for Ka‘ū Coffee Mill and Ka‘ū Farms Management LLC. He organizes all field operations for the mac nuts and coffee, from orchards, and harvesting to processing. As coffee miller and chief roaster, he ensures that Ka‘ū Coffee Mill produces the highest quality coffee. The 2013 SCAA Roasters Guild Roasters Choice Competition in Boston Massachusetts awarded one of the Chief Roasters, Segawa, as being one of the top ten roasters worldwide.

His crew counts over twenty employees. Results? Ka‘ū Coffee Mill won fifteenth place overall out of 117 entries during its first year of coffee production, as well as tenth place out of 51 statewide entries in the Hawai‘i Coffee Association annual coffee cupping competition in the commercial division. “Without the crew, none of this would be possible,” Segawa says. “My team is the backbone of the company. Working in Ka‘ū with the Trust has inspired me to push harder each day for excellence and improvement, for myself and for my employees.” While feeling fortunate to work with the Trust, Segawa does take time off: You can find him with his family, a proud husband and father of three, or else he may have gone hunting or fishing.
