Leo Norberte - JN Coffee Farms

JN Coffee Farms is located on the Mauna Loa slopes above the quaint town of Pahala, Hawai’i, where owners, Leo and Hermie Norberte reside. Their coffee recently won third and fifth place in the commercial division and ninth place in the creative division of the 2013 Hawai’i Coffee Association 5th Annual Cupping Competition Awards.

The Norberte family started this weekend business in 1996 shortly after the local sugar plantation closed. Leo had worked for the Kaʻu Sugar plantation for 30 years. After the mill shut down in 1996, he completed culinary training and attained a job as a buffet cook at the Volcano House at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

He also used his agricultural background to cultivate coffee. In an effort to help the community, former employees of Kaʻu Sugar were given the opportunity to lease acres of land for agriculture. Leo and his wife Hermie, a Kaʻu High School math teacher took a risk growing coffee. It was their dream to start their our own successful coffee business in hopes of following in the footsteps of neighboring Kona Coffee. With only five acres and a truckload of coffee seedlings from Kona, they began their journey.

Little did they know that this abandoned sugar land would produce award-winning Kaʻu coffee. The combination of rich volcanic soil, cool climate, and a prime location “has made Kaʻu Coffee truly one of a kind,” Leo said. Perhaps one of the most successful coffee growers in Kaʻu with more than 50 outlets selling J&N Coffee, the Norbertes have expanded their farm to 25 acres. This once weekend-venture has blossomed into a successful family business. Leo retired from Volcano House in 2007 to devote his time to coffee. “We’ve put everything we have into our product and with the support of loyal customers, we have made our dreams come true,” said Leo.
