Stewards of the Land, Champions of Craft

Kaʻū Coffee Mill is more than just a coffee farm—it’s a living expression of our values, heritage, and deep love for Hawaiʻi. Located in the Kaʻū region on the southern slopes of Mauna Loa, our farm is nestled in one of the most pristine, remote, and agriculturally rich areas in the world. We are farmers, roasters, and storytellers with a shared purpose: to grow and craft some of the finest coffee on Earth while honoring the ʻāina (land) that sustains us.

With every harvest, we uphold generations of Hawaiʻian agricultural tradition, blending it with innovative and sustainable farming methods. We use clean hydroelectric power, organic composting, and hands-on processing to create a product that’s as respectful to the land as it is extraordinary in taste. Our team—many of whom are from the local community—put their heart and expertise into every step, from planting to roasting, ensuring that each bag of Kaʻū Coffee reflects a true sense of place.

At Kaʻū Coffee Mill, we’re dedicated to producing coffee that’s not only rare and award-winning, but also deeply memorable. Our beans grow in volcanic soil enriched by the unique microclimate of Kaʻū—characterized by cool mountain air, gentle rains, and slow ripening. This natural environment allows us to cultivate coffee with vibrant complexity, silky body, and distinct flavor notes like wine-like fruit, sweet citrus, and floral aromatics.

We specialize in small-batch roasting to highlight the individual character of each variety, from our bold Natural Dark Roast to the smooth and balanced Peaberry Medium Roast. Whether you’re brewing a quiet morning cup or serving guests something special, Kaʻū Coffee offers an experience that’s rooted in craft, shaped by nature, and elevated by aloha.

Our History

The Roots of Ka'u Coffee Mill

Kaʻū Coffee Mill was founded with a vision to revive and celebrate the rich agricultural legacy of the Kaʻū region on Hawaiʻi Island. What began as a passion project in the early 2000s has blossomed into a thriving, community-driven operation dedicated to producing some of the world’s most distinctive coffees.

Built on former sugarcane land, the mill was established to create opportunities for local farmers, provide sustainable jobs, and showcase the unique potential of Kaʻū-grown coffee. Over the years, we’ve invested in state-of-the-art processing, eco-conscious farming, and small-batch roasting—all while staying rooted in local values and Hawaiʻian tradition.

Today, Kaʻū Coffee Mill stands as a symbol of renewal, resilience, and pride—sharing the rich flavors of Kaʻū with coffee lovers around the world.

History of the Olson Trust

Edmund C. Olson was a successful businessman who dedicated his later years to preserving Hawaiʻi’s land, culture, and agricultural heritage. Through the Edmund C. Olson Trust II, he protected over 15,000 acres across Hawaiʻi, focusing on sustainable agriculture, conservation, renewable energy, and education. His legacy includes founding Kaʻū Coffee Mill, O.K. Farms, and Hāmākua Macadamia Nut Company—businesses that reflect his belief in supporting rural communities and keeping Hawaiʻi beautiful for future generations.

Philanthropy & local farmer support

The Olson Trust continues Ed’s commitment to uplifting local farmers and giving back to the community. It supports initiatives that strengthen agricultural education, create jobs in farming and land stewardship, and provide direct assistance to growers across the islands. From scholarships for local students to infrastructure that helps small farms thrive, the Trust works to ensure that the people who care for Hawaiʻi’s ʻāina are empowered to flourish.
